Flores: Maumere Bay – Pangabatang Dive Site – Flores Island
Site Overview
Pangabatang is a reef site in Maumere Bay on the north coast of Flores Island, featuring extensive coral slopes and a vibrant marine ecosystem that has regenerated impressively since the devastating 1992 earthquake and tsunami. The site features a coral-covered slope descending from 3 meters to approximately 24 meters, with healthy hard coral gardens in the shallower sections and scattered bommies transitioning to a low wall at depth. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reef, and the shallow sections support schools of sweetlips, snapper, and fusiliers among diverse staghorn, plate, brain, and mushroom corals. The bommies at 10 to 18 meters are covered in soft corals and gorgonian sea fans, hosting lionfish, moray eels, and scorpionfish. Sandy patches between the formations harbor blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels. The low wall at 18 to 24 meters features barrel sponges and occasional whitetip reef sharks. The mild current and warm water create comfortable conditions for extended dives, and the gentle slope makes Pangabatang one of the most accessible dives in Maumere Bay for beginners. The site is best dived from April through December when the dry season provides optimal visibility. Accessible from Maumere by boat in approximately 30 minutes, Pangabatang is typically combined with Wairterang and Pemana Besar on Maumere Bay day trips. The coral recovery story at Pangabatang is one of the most inspiring in Indonesian diving, showcasing nature's resilience after a major geological event.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the shallow reef flat at approximately 3 to 5 meters. The coral garden is immediately visible, with diverse hard corals and hawksbill turtles feeding on the reef. Your guide leads you along the coral slope as the mild current carries you gently along the reef. Schools of sweetlips, snapper, and fusiliers move through the water column at 5 to 12 meters. Blue-spotted stingrays glide across the sandy patches between the bommies. As you continue along the slope, the bommies at 10 to 18 meters are covered in soft corals and gorgonian sea fans, with lionfish and moray eels in the crevices. The low wall at 18 to 24 meters features barrel sponges and occasional whitetip reef sharks. Your guide leads you back up to the shallow reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the coral garden provides a vibrant backdrop."
