Flores: Maumere Bay – Wairterang Dive Site – Flores Island
Site Overview
Wairterang is a reef dive in Maumere Bay on the north coast of Flores Island, offering healthy coral slopes and walls in a protected bay environment that suits all certification levels. The site features a fringing reef descending from 3 meters to approximately 22 meters, with extensive hard coral gardens in the shallower sections transitioning to a low wall with bommies at depth. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reef, feeding on the coral slopes and often approaching divers with curiosity. The shallower sections at 3 to 10 meters are covered in diverse hard and soft corals, with staghorn, plate, and brain corals creating a colorful mosaic that shelters juvenile reef fish and diverse invertebrates. The bommies at 10 to 18 meters attract schools of fusiliers, anthias, and sweetlips, while moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish inhabit the wall crevices. Sandy patches between the bommies harbor blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels. The wall at 18 to 22 meters features gorgonian sea fans, barrel sponges, and occasional whitetip reef sharks. The mild current and warm water create comfortable conditions for extended dives. Wairterang is best dived from April through December and is accessible from Maumere by boat in approximately 20 minutes. Maumere Bay was once renowned as one of the best dive destinations in Indonesia, and while the 1992 earthquake impacted some reef structures, the bay has recovered significantly and continues to offer rewarding diving with excellent coral diversity. Wairterang serves as an ideal first-dive or checkout site on Flores itineraries.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the shallow reef flat at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Hawksbill turtles are often visible feeding on the reef within the first minutes. Your guide leads you along the coral slope as the mild current carries you gently along the reef. The coral garden at 5 to 12 meters is diverse and colorful, with schools of fusiliers and sweetlips moving through the water column. Blue-spotted stingrays glide across the sandy patches between the bommies. As you continue along the slope, the topography transitions into a low wall at 15 to 18 meters with ledges harboring moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish. The deeper wall at 18 to 22 meters features gorgonian sea fans and occasional whitetip reef sharks. Your guide leads you back up to the shallow reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the coral garden and turtle encounters continue."
