Gamat Bay Dive Site – Nusa Penida
Site Overview
Gamat Bay is a charming and accessible dive site located in a sheltered bay on the northwest coast of Nusa Penida, offering some of the calmest and most beginner-friendly diving in the region. The site features a gentle coral slope that descends from 3 meters to approximately 20 meters, with healthy hard and soft corals growing on limestone bommies interspersed with patches of white sand. Despite its gentle conditions, Gamat Bay is surprisingly rich in marine life, with multiple species of clownfish inhabiting the anemone colonies on the shallower bommies, seahorses clinging to the gorgonian fans, and hawksbill turtles regularly encountered grazing on the reef. The site is particularly productive for macro photographers, with a remarkable diversity of nudibranchs, shrimps, and small cryptic species inhabiting the coral surfaces and crevices. The rare and highly venomous blue-ringed octopus is occasionally spotted in the rubble patches, adding an element of excitement for experienced critter hunters. Gamat Bay serves as the ideal check-dive site for divers arriving in Nusa Penida, allowing them to acclimatize to the local conditions before tackling the more challenging current dives at Manta Point, Crystal Bay, or the southern coast sites. The sheltered bay also makes it an excellent option for Open Water training dives, refresher dives, and snorkeling excursions, ensuring that divers of all levels can enjoy the underwater beauty of Nusa Penida.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a gentle descent from the boat onto the shallowest section of the reef at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide leads you along the gentle slope, exploring the coral bommies and the sand channels between them. The first section features dense staghorn and plate coral formations with clownfish anemones on the bommie tops and juvenile reef fish sheltering among the branches. As you descend to 10 to 15 meters, the bommies become larger with more soft coral coverage and deeper crevices where moray eels and lobsters shelter. The sandy patches at 15 to 18 meters host garden eels and the occasional bluespotted ribbontail ray. The return leg works back along the shallower reef, where the clownfish colonies and seahorse locations provide the most photogenic subjects. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent above the thriving shallow coral garden, often accompanied by turtles. The light in the shallows is spectacular for your final safety stop photos."
