Gili Air: Frogfish Point Dive Site – Lombok
Site Overview
Frogfish Point on Gili Air is a dedicated macro and muck diving site that has earned its reputation as one of the best locations in the Gili Islands for encountering multiple species of frogfish. The site features a gentle slope on the southeast side of Gili Air, where a mosaic of coral bommies and rubble patches creates the ideal hunting habitat for painted frogfish, warty frogfish, and the occasional giant frogfish. The rubble substrate between the bommies supports an extraordinary diversity of small marine creatures, including mimic octopus that emerge from the sand to impersonate other species, flamboyant cuttlefish that flash vivid warning colors, and ribbon eels that extend from crevices in the coral. The site's easy conditions and shallow depth profile allow divers to spend extended time searching for and photographing these small subjects without the pressure of strong currents or deep decompression obligations. Local dive guides have an exceptional knowledge of the site's resident critters and can reliably locate frogfish in their favorite ambush positions. Frogfish Point is typically combined with Hanns Reef or Segara for a two-tank day trip that offers a nice contrast between reef scenery and dedicated macro exploration. The site is also popular for afternoon dives when the warm, shallow water and easy conditions make for a relaxed and productive search for small creatures.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallow coral bommies at approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide leads you across the slope, alternating between coral bommies and rubble patches as you search for frogfish and other macro subjects. The painted frogfish are typically found perched on the coral bommies, using their lure to attract prey. The rubble patches at 10 to 16 meters are where mimic octopus and flamboyant cuttlefish are most commonly encountered. Ribbon eels extend from the crevices in the deeper coral formations at 15 to 20 meters. The dive follows a circular route that explores the entire slope before returning to the shallower bommies. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent exploring the well-lit coral garden where juvenile fish and small invertebrates provide additional photographic subjects. Keep your eyes peeled for well-camouflaged stonefish during your safety stop. Make sure you also check the undersides of any small ledges."
