Gili Air: Hanns Reef Dive Site – Lombok
Site Overview
Hanns Reef is one of the premier dive sites around Gili Air, featuring a beautiful coral slope that descends from 4 meters to approximately 24 meters on the southern side of the island. The site is renowned for its reliable hawksbill turtle encounters, with multiple individuals commonly seen grazing on the reef during every dive. Large schools of orbicular batfish patrol the mid-water above the coral bommies, creating stunning wide-angle photography opportunities against the backdrop of healthy hard and soft coral formations. Blacktip reef sharks occasionally pass through the deeper sand channels, while ornate ghost pipefish hide among the crinoids and sea fans on the bommies. Banded sea kraits, the distinctive black-and-white marine snakes, are frequently encountered swimming gracefully along the reef or resting on the coral heads. The reef structure consists of limestone bommies covered in vibrant coral growth, separated by white sand channels that add visual variety to the underwater landscape. The nutrient-rich currents flowing between Gili Air and Lombok sustain the abundant marine life, while the moderate conditions make the site accessible to intermediate divers. Hanns Reef is typically combined with Frogfish Point or Segara for a varied day of diving that showcases the diversity of Gili Air's underwater environment.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallowest bommies at approximately 4 to 6 meters, where the coral garden immediately impresses with its density and health. Your guide leads you along the slope, gradually working deeper as you explore the colorful bommies and the sand channels between them. At 10 to 16 meters, the bommies become larger with more overhangs sheltering moray eels and lobsters. Hawksbill turtles are commonly encountered feeding on the reef at all depths. The deeper sections at 18 to 24 meters feature soft coral-covered walls and sand channels where blacktip reef sharks occasionally patrol. The return leg works back along the shallower reef, exploring the coral garden in the warm, well-lit water. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent among the thriving shallow corals with batfish schooling overhead. The light at this depth is often perfect for a few final wide-angle shots of the reef."
