Gili Air: Segara Dive Site – Lombok
Site Overview
Segara is a beautifully diverse dive site on the eastern side of Gili Air that offers a complete underwater experience within a single dive. The site features a gentle slope that transitions from seagrass meadows in the shallows through vibrant hard coral gardens at mid-depths to soft coral-covered slopes in the deeper sections, reaching a maximum depth of approximately 22 meters. Green turtles are the star attraction, commonly found grazing in the seagrass beds at 5 to 10 meters where multiple individuals can be observed simultaneously. The hard coral garden at 10 to 15 meters is a kaleidoscope of color, with dense staghorn formations, massive brain corals, and table corals providing shelter for schools of anthias, damselfish, and pink skunk clownfish. Blue-spotted stingrays glide across the sand channels between the coral heads, while leaf fish camouflage perfectly against the coral rubble. The deeper soft coral slope at 15 to 22 meters is home to mandarin fish that emerge during evening dives in the cooler months. The site's easy conditions, reliable turtle encounters, and diverse underwater landscapes make it one of the most popular dives on Gili Air, suitable for all certification levels from beginners to experienced photographers. Segara is also excellent for snorkelers who can enjoy the turtles and coral garden from the surface in the shallow sections.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the seagrass beds at approximately 5 to 8 meters, where green turtles are usually spotted within the first few minutes feeding among the blades. Your guide leads you across the seagrass meadow to the coral garden, where the depth increases to 10 to 15 meters and the biodiversity explodes. The coral bommies are covered in anthias, clownfish anemones, and schools of juvenile fish. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on the sand channels between the bommies. The dive continues to the deeper soft coral slope at 15 to 22 meters, where leaf fish and the occasional mandarin fish can be found. The return leg follows the shallower sections back toward the boat, exploring the coral garden in the warm, well-lit water. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent among the seagrass beds where turtles often swim past overhead. Watch the surface for the shimmering light and the boats returning to the Gili Air harbor."
