Gili Meno: Bounty Pier Dive Site – Lombok
Site Overview
Bounty Pier on Gili Meno is a hidden gem among the Gili Islands dive sites, offering exceptional macro and muck diving directly from the shore at the island's main pier. The concrete pier pillars create an artificial reef structure that has been colonized by a remarkable diversity of marine life, from tiny seahorses and nudibranchs to large frogfish and moray eels. The site is one of the few locations in the Gili Islands where mandarinfish can be reliably observed during their evening mating displays, particularly during the cooler months from September through February. Commerson's frogfish in various color phases perch on the pillar encrustations, while seahorses cling to the hydroids and soft corals growing on the concrete structure. The rubble bottom between the pillars supports additional critters including stonefish, scorpionfish, and various species of shrimp and gobies. Despite the lower visibility compared to offshore reef sites, Bounty Pier is a macro photographer's dream, with subjects so abundant that a single pillar can provide an entire dive of photographic opportunities. The site's accessibility as a shore dive makes it ideal for unlimited diving, and it is particularly productive during evening dives when nocturnal species emerge. Bounty Pier proves that some of the best diving in the Gili Islands happens in the most unexpected locations.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a simple entry from the pier steps or ladder, descending to the sandy bottom at approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide leads you along the line of pier pillars, each one offering a different community of encrusting organisms and their associated critters. The first pillars in the shallower water feature dense hydroid growth with seahorses and small nudibranchs. As you move to the deeper outer pillars at 12 to 18 meters, the pillars are covered in larger sponges and tunicates that shelter frogfish, moray eels, and the occasional mandarinfish. The rubble bottom between the pillars hosts stonefish and various shrimp species. The dive concludes with a slow return to the shallower pillars, exploring the well-lit sections where schools of small reef fish congregate. The safety stop is spent at 5 meters along the inner pillars. The calm conditions here make it very easy to stay as long as you want in the shallows."
