Gili Trawangan: Hans Reef Dive Site – Lombok
Site Overview
Hans Reef is a submerged pinnacle off the east coast of Gili Trawangan that rises dramatically from 28 meters to just 5 meters below the surface, creating one of the most exciting dive sites in the Gili Islands. The reef structure acts as a fish magnet in the open water, attracting large schools of barracuda, trevally, and fusiliers that swirl around the pinnacle summit in impressive formations. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper slopes, while whitetip reef sharks rest in the limestone overhangs at intermediate depths. The site's exposed position on the eastern side of Gili Trawangan means it benefits from nutrient-rich currents flowing from the Lombok Strait, which sustain the abundant pelagic life. Napoleon wrasse, a protected species, are regularly encountered cruising along the reef edge, and giant trevally hunt in the current on the up-current side of the pinnacle. The coral coverage is excellent, with massive table corals, sea fans, and soft corals adorning the limestone structure. Hans Reef is best suited for intermediate to advanced divers who are comfortable with moderate currents and deeper profiles. The site is typically combined with Deep Turbo or Shark Point for a varied day of diving that showcases both the reef and pelagic aspects of the Gili Islands underwater environment.
Dive Briefing
"The dive starts with a descent onto the pinnacle summit at approximately 5 to 8 meters, where you immediately encounter dense schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish. Your guide leads you down the pinnacle slope, spiraling around the reef structure as you descend. At 12 to 18 meters, the limestone walls are covered in soft corals and sea fans, with whitetip reef sharks resting in the crevices. The deeper sections at 20 to 28 meters feature grey reef sharks patrolling the reef base and giant trevally hunting in the current. After spending time at the deeper sections, the dive ascends back up the pinnacle, exploring the vibrant shallow reef. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent among the schooling fish on the pinnacle summit, often with barracuda hovering just overhead. Take a moment to look into the blue as you ascend, as larger visitors often pass by the pinnacle at these times."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Hans Reef is best suited for intermediate to advanced divers who are comfortable with moderate currents and deeper dive profiles. Pelagic enthusiasts and wide-angle photographers will find the schooling fish and shark encounters particularly rewarding. The site offers a more adventurous diving experience compared to the calmer coral garden sites around the Gili Islands. It is an excellent choice for those who want to see the 'big stuff' and enjoy the feeling of being on a submerged mountain in the middle of the channel. The dynamic nature of the site ensures that no two dives are ever exactly the same.
