Gili Trawangan: Shark Point Dive Site – Lombok
Site Overview
Shark Point is one of the premier dive sites around Gili Trawangan, offering reliable encounters with both whitetip and blacktip reef sharks in a beautiful coral slope setting. The site features a gently sloping reef that descends from 5 meters to approximately 25 meters, covered in healthy hard and soft corals growing on limestone bommies interspersed with white sand channels. The reef sharks are resident throughout the year, with whitetips commonly found resting in the deeper overhangs and blacktips patrolling the shallower reef edge in small groups. The nutrient-rich currents flowing between the Gili Islands sustain an abundant and diverse reef ecosystem, with large schools of barracuda, trevally, and fusiliers swirling above the bommies. Hawksbill turtles are frequently encountered grazing on the reef, and eagle rays make periodic appearances during the dry season. The coral coverage at Shark Point is among the best in the Gili Islands, reflecting the success of local marine conservation efforts and the establishment of no-fishing zones around all three Gilis. The site is easily accessible from the dive centers on Gili Trawangan, typically requiring just a 10-minute boat ride. Shark Point serves as an excellent introduction to the Gili Islands diving experience, combining reliable shark encounters with vibrant coral scenery in moderate conditions that are accessible to intermediate divers.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallowest bommies at approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide leads you along the slope, gradually working deeper as you explore the coral formations and the sand channels between them. The first section features dense staghorn and plate coral formations that shelter schools of reef fish. As you descend to 15 to 20 meters, the bommies become larger with more overhangs where whitetip reef sharks rest during the day. The sand channels at 20 to 25 meters are where blacktip reef sharks patrol and eagle rays occasionally pass through. The return leg works back along the shallower reef, exploring the colorful coral gardens and keeping an eye out for any final shark sightings in the shallows. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent among the thriving shallow corals, where the sunlight brings out the brilliant colors of the reef. Take your time during the ascent to fully appreciate the diversity of the upper reef zone."
