Komodo: Bidadari Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Bidadari is a picturesque small island near Labuan Bajo in western Komodo National Park, offering relaxed reef diving with easy conditions and abundant marine life that suits all certification levels. The site features a fringing reef descending from 2 meters to approximately 20 meters, with a coral-covered slope in the shallower sections transitioning to scattered bommies and a low wall at depth. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reef, and the shallow coral gardens host clownfish in anemones, leaf scorpionfish, and various nudibranch species. The bommies at 10 to 16 meters attract schools of fusiliers, anthias, and damselfish, while moray eels and lionfish inhabit the crevices. The wall at 16 to 20 meters features gorgonian sea fans, barrel sponges, and occasional whitetip reef sharks. The mild current and warm water create comfortable conditions for extended dives, and the diverse hard and soft coral coverage provides a colorful backdrop throughout. Bidadari is best dived from April through December and is one of the closest Komodo dive sites to Labuan Bajo, reachable in approximately 18 minutes by speedboat. This proximity makes it ideal for half-day trips and afternoon dives when time is limited. The island's white sand beaches and turquoise waters also make it a popular snorkeling stop and surface interval location on multi-site day trips.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the shallow reef flat at approximately 2 to 4 meters. Clownfish in anemones and hawksbill turtles feeding on the reef provide immediate interest. Your guide leads you along the coral slope as the mild current carries you gently along the island's edge. The coral garden at 5 to 10 meters is diverse and colorful, with staghorn, plate, and brain corals sheltering juvenile reef fish. As you continue along the slope, scattered bommies at 10 to 16 meters attract schools of fusiliers and anthias, while moray eels and lionfish occupy the crevices. Leaf scorpionfish are often found camouflaged on the bommie surfaces. The wall at 16 to 20 meters features gorgonian sea fans and occasional whitetip reef sharks. Your guide leads you back up to the shallow reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the coral garden and turtle encounters continue."
