Komodo: Cannibal Rock Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Cannibal Rock is widely regarded as one of the most biodiverse dive sites in Komodo National Park and possibly all of Indonesia, located off the south coast of Rinca Island in the southern section of the park. The site is a large submerged rock rising from approximately 30 meters to just 3 meters below the surface, and is covered in an extraordinary density of invertebrate life sustained by the cold, nutrient-rich waters that flow from the Indian Ocean through the southern channels. The thermoclines at Cannibal Rock can drop the water temperature to 20°C or below, which creates ideal conditions for an incredible profusion of soft corals, gorgonian sea fans, crinoids, sponges, tunicates, and hydroids that encrust every available surface. This invertebrate richness supports an equally diverse community of small marine life, making Cannibal Rock a paradise for macro photographers. Pygmy seahorses can be found on the gorgonian fans, dozens of species of nudibranch patrol the surfaces, frogfish camouflage among the sponges, and countless species of shrimp, crab, and other crustaceans inhabit the crevices. Larger marine life is also well represented, with whitetip reef sharks resting on the ledges, schooling barracuda and surgeonfish in the current, and Napoleon wrasse cruising along the rock face. The site is best dived from April through December and is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat as part of a southern Komodo day trip or liveaboard itinerary.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallow summit of the rock at approximately 3 to 5 meters. The summit is covered in vibrant coral and invertebrate growth, but the most spectacular life is found as you descend along the walls. Your guide leads you down the current-facing side, where the gorgonian sea fans are at their largest and most numerous. At 8 to 12 meters, carefully examine the gorgonians for pygmy seahorses — they are tiny but regularly found by experienced guides. The walls at 12 to 20 meters are a riot of color, with crinoids, sponges, soft corals, and tunicates competing for space. Nudibranchs of every color and size crawl across the surfaces, and frogfish lurk among the sponges. The deeper sections at 20 to 30 meters feature overhangs and crevices where the invertebrate coverage is even denser, illuminated by your dive torch. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the ledges, and schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish swirl in the current. The ascent follows the shallower walls at 5 to 10 meters, where the coral garden provides an excellent safety stop. The cold thermoclines at depth can make this a chilly dive, so a full-length wetsuit is essential."

Safety & Hazards
- Cold thermoclines at depth causing rapid temperature drops to 20°C or below
- Moderate currents along the rock face requiring drift diving awareness
- Fire coral on the shallower bommies near the summit
- Dense invertebrate coverage requiring excellent buoyancy to avoid contact
- Scorpionfish and stonefish camouflaged on the rock surfaces
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Cannibal Rock is ideal for macro photography enthusiasts, biodiversity lovers, and intermediate divers comfortable with moderate currents and cold thermoclines. The extraordinary invertebrate life makes it a world-class macro destination that rewards slow, careful observation. The site is less physically demanding than the pinnacle sites. It is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the smaller, often more colorful side of the marine world. Divers who have explored other parts of Indonesia will find the specific mix of southern Komodo species to be quite distinct. The sheer density of life packed onto this single submerged rock is something every serious diver should witness at least once.
