Komodo: Castle Rock Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Castle Rock is one of the most famous and exhilarating dive sites in Komodo National Park, featuring a massive submerged seamount that rises from beyond 40 meters to just 4 meters below the surface. Located in the northern section of the park between Gililawa Laut and the Komodo mainland, Castle Rock sits directly in the path of powerful tidal currents that funnel through the narrow channel. The relentless flow of nutrient-rich water has created an extraordinary profusion of coral life that covers every surface of the seamount, from dense soft corals and massive gorgonian sea fans on the deeper walls to pristine hard coral gardens on the shallow summit. The pelagic encounters at Castle Rock are what make it legendary — grey reef sharks patrol the deeper ledges in numbers, schools of barracuda form massive spiraling formations, giant trevally hunt aggressively along the current-swept walls, and eagle rays glide gracefully past on the upcurrent side. Napoleon wrasse, a protected species, are frequently seen cruising along the reef face. The site demands advanced certification and significant current diving experience, as the conditions can be extremely challenging with multi-directional flow, downcurrents, and a washing machine effect around the pinnacle. Castle Rock is typically dived during the slack tide window and is frequently paired with nearby Crystal Rock for a spectacular two-dive pinnacle experience. The site is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat or as part of a liveaboard itinerary.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a negative entry from the boat directly onto the shallow summit at approximately 4 meters. The summit is a vibrant coral garden with table corals and dense staghorn formations. Your guide leads you down the current-facing side of the seamount, where the wall drops steeply to 30 to 40 meters. The current can be extremely powerful, and divers use reef hooks to hold position while observing the pelagic action. Grey reef sharks cruise the deeper ledges, while massive schools of barracuda swirl in the current above. Giant trevally and Napoleon wrasse hunt along the wall face. At 20 to 25 meters, the coral-encrusted overhangs provide temporary shelter from the strongest flow. As you circumnavigate the pinnacle, the current direction and intensity change, requiring constant awareness and adjustment. Your guide signals the ascent when nitrogen limits approach, and you work your way back up the sheltered side to the shallow summit for the safety stop. The coral garden at 4 to 8 meters is spectacular in its own right, with vibrant colors and abundant reef fish."
