    Site Overview

Crystal Rock is a stunning submerged pinnacle in the northern section of Komodo National Park, renowned for its exceptional visibility that regularly exceeds 30 meters during the dry season. The site features a broader summit plateau than its neighbor Castle Rock, sitting at approximately 5 meters below the surface and providing a larger area of vibrant shallow coral garden. The walls of the pinnacle drop steeply to 35 meters and beyond, covered in dense coral growth sustained by the powerful channel currents that sweep through the area. The combination of crystal-clear water and extraordinary coral coverage creates an almost surreal underwater environment that lives up to the site's name. The pelagic life at Crystal Rock is outstanding, with regular encounters with grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, large schools of barracuda, eagle rays, and giant trevally. The site is also known for its populations of sweetlips and other reef fish that congregate around the coral-covered bommies. Crystal Rock is almost always dived alongside Castle Rock as part of a two-dive pinnacle experience, and together they form one of the most celebrated dive combinations in all of Indonesia. The broader summit makes Crystal Rock slightly more forgiving than Castle Rock, providing a more comfortable safety stop environment and better opportunities for examining the shallow coral and macro life. The site is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat or as part of a liveaboard itinerary.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a negative entry from the boat onto the summit plateau at approximately 5 meters. The plateau is a stunning coral garden with dense staghorn formations, table corals, and colorful anthias swirling in the current. Your guide leads you to the edge of the plateau where the wall drops steeply into the blue. The current-facing side features the most prolific coral growth, with massive gorgonian sea fans, barrel sponges, and soft corals covering every surface. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper ledges at 20 to 30 meters, while schools of barracuda form spiraling formations in the current. Eagle rays may glide past on the blue side, and whitetip reef sharks rest on the ledges. The overhangs at 15 to 20 meters provide shelter from the current and harbor interesting macro life. As your bottom time approaches its limit, your guide leads you back up to the summit plateau for an outstanding safety stop among the vibrant shallow corals. The visibility on the plateau often exceeds 30 meters, making it one of the most photogenic safety stops in Komodo."
