Komodo: Gililawa Laut Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Gililawa Laut is a pinnacle-rich dive site in central Komodo National Park, offering some of the most dramatic underwater topography in the region. Several coral-encrusted pinnacles rise from 30 meters to within 5 meters of the surface, creating vertical habitat that attracts both pelagic and reef species. The moderate to strong current flows around the pinnacles, concentrating nutrients that feed dense soft coral growth and draw in schools of trevally, barracuda, and batfish. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper bases at 20 to 30 meters, while whitetip reef sharks rest on the mid-level ledges. Napoleon wrasse cruise between the pinnacles with curiosity, and hawksbill turtles are frequently encountered on the connecting slopes. The pinnacle summits at 5 to 10 meters are covered in colorful soft corals, gorgonian fans, and anemones, providing excellent shallow diving after exploring the deeper walls. The site is best dived from April through December when the currents are predictable and visibility reaches 20 to 35 meters, offering spectacular wide-angle photography opportunities. Accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat, Gililawa Laut is typically paired with Gililawa Darat on central Komodo day trips. The combination of dramatic topography, healthy coral coverage, and abundant large marine life makes it one of the highlights of the central Komodo circuit and a favorite among wide-angle photographers.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the first pinnacle summit at approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide leads you around the pinnacle as you descend along the wall to the base at 25 to 30 meters, where grey reef sharks patrol the sand and whitetip reef sharks rest on the ledges. The current carries you to the next pinnacle, where you ascend through schools of barracuda and trevally swirling in the flow. Napoleon wrasse cruise between the pinnacles, often approaching divers with curiosity. The mid-level sections at 12 to 18 meters feature dense soft coral growth and gorgonian fans. Your guide leads you from pinnacle to pinnacle, using the current to cover ground efficiently. The final ascent takes you up a pinnacle to 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the summit coral garden is vibrant and the current moderates. Be sure to maintain good buoyancy as you cross the gaps between the pinnacles."

Safety & Hazards
- Strong currents around the pinnacles that can push divers into open water
- Pinnacle summits at 5 meters requiring careful ascent awareness
- Variable current direction on the downcurrent side of pinnacles
- Depth extending to 30 meters requiring strict air management
- Boat traffic on the surface during drift ascent
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Gililawa Laut is suitable for intermediate divers with Advanced Open Water certification and some drift diving experience. The moderate to strong currents and deeper profile make it more challenging than Gililawa Darat, but the predictable conditions and excellent visibility keep it accessible for experienced recreational divers. It is an outstanding choice for those who love dramatic topography and the feeling of flying underwater. Wide-angle photographers will especially appreciate the vertical relief of the pinnacles and the constant presence of schooling fish in the blue. If you enjoy multi-level diving with a high chance of seeing both reef and pelagic species, Gililawa Laut will likely be a highlight of your Komodo trip.
