Komodo: Makassar Reef (Manta Point) Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Makassar Reef, also known as Manta Point, is one of the most accessible and reliable manta ray dive sites in Komodo National Park, located on the southeastern coast of Komodo Island. The site features a shallow coral slope descending from 3 meters to approximately 20 meters, with manta cleaning stations scattered across the reef at depths of 5 to 12 meters. This shallow profile makes Makassar Reef ideal for Open Water certified divers and snorkelers who want to experience manta rays without the need for advanced certification. The reef manta rays that visit Makassar Reef are part of the same resident population seen at Manta Alley, and encounters are reliable year-round with peak activity from September through January when plankton concentrations are highest. The moderate currents that flow along the reef slope concentrate plankton against the coral, creating ideal feeding and cleaning conditions that attract multiple mantas on a single dive. The mantas circle the cleaning stations in a predictable pattern, often passing within 1 to 2 meters of divers as small wrasses and butterflyfish perform their cleaning duties. Beyond the manta encounters, the reef itself is healthy and diverse, supporting whitetip reef sharks, marble rays, hawksbill turtles, and abundant tropical reef fish. The shallow depths allow for extended bottom times, making Makassar Reef a relaxing and rewarding dive that pairs beautifully with the more intense experiences at the deeper pinnacle sites. The site is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat and is a highlight of southern Komodo itineraries.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallow coral slope at approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide leads you to the first cleaning station, a coral bommie at 8 to 10 meters where the mantas regularly come to be cleaned. Divers position themselves on the sandy bottom near the cleaning station and wait quietly for the mantas to arrive. The mantas typically circle the cleaning station in a slow, predictable pattern, passing directly overhead or within arm's reach of divers. Remain still and do not chase the mantas, as this will cause them to leave. Your guide may lead you to a second or third cleaning station for different perspectives. Between manta visits, the surrounding coral slope offers excellent diving with whitetip reef sharks, marble rays, hawksbill turtles, and dense schools of reef fish. The final portion of the dive follows the shallow reef at 3 to 6 meters back toward the boat for the safety stop. Snorkelers observe the mantas from the surface above the cleaning stations, where the shallow depths make the mantas easily visible."

Safety & Hazards
- Moderate currents requiring awareness of position relative to the boat

- Reduced visibility from plankton concentrations that attract the mantas
- Temptation to chase or touch the manta rays which is prohibited
- Fire coral on the shallow bommies near the reef crest
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Makassar Reef is suitable for divers of all levels, including Open Water certified divers, thanks to the shallow depth profile and moderate conditions. The site is also excellent for snorkelers who can observe the mantas from the surface. Underwater photographers of all levels will find outstanding opportunities for manta photography in the shallow, well-lit water. It is the perfect spot for those who want a high-probability manta encounter without the depth and currents of Manta Alley. Families and mixed-skill groups will particularly appreciate the site's versatility and relaxed pace. For many, a dive at Makassar Reef is the defining highlight of their Komodo experience, offering intimate moments with some of the ocean's most graceful inhabitants.
