    Site Overview

Manta Alley is one of the most famous and reliable manta ray dive sites in Indonesia, located in the southern section of Komodo National Park near Komodo Island. The site features a series of cleaning stations on a shallow reef slope where reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) gather daily to be cleaned by small fish and to feed on the abundant plankton carried by the currents. The mantas are resident in the area year-round, with the highest numbers typically observed from September through January when plankton concentrations are greatest. Multiple mantas are commonly seen on a single dive, often passing within meters of divers as they circle the cleaning stations. The shallow depth profile of 5 to 25 meters means that encounters happen in comfortable diving conditions, making Manta Alley accessible to a wide range of divers and excellent for snorkelers who can observe the mantas from the surface. The currents that bring the plankton also sustain healthy coral growth on the surrounding reef, which supports whitetip reef sharks, marble rays, schools of sweetlips, and abundant tropical reef fish. The site is regularly visited by both day trip operators from Labuan Bajo and liveaboard vessels, and is considered a must-dive for any visitor to Komodo National Park. The combination of reliable manta encounters, easy conditions, and stunning coral scenery makes Manta Alley one of the most popular dive sites in all of Indonesia.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallow reef slope at approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide leads you to the first cleaning station, a coral bommie at approximately 10 to 12 meters where the mantas regularly come to be cleaned by small wrasses and butterflyfish. Divers position themselves in a semi-circle on the sandy bottom near the cleaning station and wait quietly for the mantas to arrive. The mantas typically circle the cleaning station in a predictable pattern, passing within 1 to 2 meters of divers as they hover above the bommie. It is essential to remain still and not chase or touch the mantas, as this will cause them to leave the cleaning station. Your guide may lead you to a second cleaning station at 15 to 18 meters for a different perspective. Between manta visits, the surrounding reef offers excellent diving with whitetip reef sharks, marble rays, and dense schools of reef fish. The final portion of the dive follows the shallow reef at 5 to 8 meters back toward the boat for the safety stop. Snorkelers observe the mantas from the surface above the cleaning stations."

    Safety & Hazards

    • Moderate currents requiring awareness of depth and position relative to the boat
    • Reduced visibility from plankton concentrations that attract the mantas
    • Temptation to chase or touch the manta rays, which is prohibited
    • Shallow coral heads requiring careful buoyancy near the cleaning stations
    • Other divers in the group potentially disrupting the manta viewing
