Komodo: Pink Beach Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Pink Beach is one of the most famous and photographed locations in Komodo National Park, renowned both for its stunning pink sand beach — one of only a handful in the world — and its accessible shallow reef diving. The beach gets its distinctive pink color from fragments of red coral (Foraminifera) mixed with white sand, creating a surreal landscape of pink sand meeting turquoise water against a backdrop of dry savanna hills. Below the surface, the shallow reef extends from the beach in a gentle slope to approximately 15 meters, with healthy coral gardens and abundant marine life in the warm, clear water. Pink Beach is one of the few shore-accessible dive sites in Komodo, with a short swim from the pink sand bringing divers directly onto the reef. Hawksbill turtles are regularly encountered feeding on the coral, clownfish inhabit the anemones, and blue-spotted stingrays glide across the pink sand. The shallow depth and calm conditions make it ideal for beginners and snorkelers, while the macro life including mandarin fish, cuttlefish, and nudibranchs keeps experienced divers interested. Pink Beach is best visited from April through December and is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat. It is typically included as part of a southern Komodo itinerary alongside Manta Alley and Mawan, providing a unique combination of underwater diving and above-water scenic beauty that makes it one of the most memorable stops on any Komodo trip.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a shore entry from the famous pink sand beach, where you wade into the warm water and descend to the shallow reef at approximately 2 to 3 meters. The reef immediately reveals healthy coral coverage, with staghorn formations, table corals, and anemones hosting clownfish. Your guide leads you along the slope as it gradually deepens to 8 to 12 meters, where the coral bommies are larger and covered in soft corals. Hawksbill turtles are commonly encountered feeding at all depths, and blue-spotted stingrays rest on the pink sand between the coral heads. The seagrass patches at 8 to 10 meters harbor cuttlefish and mandarin fish. The deeper sections at 12 to 15 meters feature scattered bommies and sand channels. The return leg follows the shallower reef at 3 to 5 meters back toward the beach, where the coral garden is most vibrant in the well-lit water. The safety stop at 3 to 5 meters is spent among the shallow corals with the pink sand visible below. Snorkelers explore the same reef from the surface, where the shallow coral is easily visible."
