Komodo: Sangeang Volcano – Techno Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Sangeang Volcano Techno is a dive site on the slopes of Sangeang Api named for the rhythmic pulsing of gas bubbles that rise from extensive volcanic vent fields on the seafloor, creating an underwater soundscape reminiscent of techno music. The site features a volcanic slope descending from 4 meters to approximately 28 meters, with the most active gas vent fields concentrated at 12 to 22 meters where thousands of bubble streams rise simultaneously from the substrate in mesmerizing curtains. The volcanic terrain is dramatic, with black rock formations, lava-like flows, and chimney structures created by mineral deposits from the venting gas. The bubble streams create a pulsing rhythm that can be heard through your regulator, giving the site its distinctive name. The volcanic slope supports soft corals, black coral bushes, and crinoids that thrive in the mineral-rich water, while the vent fields host specialized thermophilic bacteria and unique invertebrate communities found nowhere else. Pygmy seahorses inhabit the gorgonian fans, ghost pipefish hide among the crinoids, and an exceptional diversity of nudibranchs and flatworms covers the volcanic rock. Mantis shrimp and various crab species patrol the rubble zones between the vent fields. The shallower sections at 4 to 10 meters feature black sand with garden eel colonies and juvenile reef fish. Techno is best dived from April through December and completes the Sangeang volcanic diving trilogy alongside Bonto and Hot Rocks. The combination of acoustic phenomena, volcanic geology, and adapted marine life makes Techno a truly one-of-a-kind dive experience in Indonesia.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the volcanic slope at approximately 4 to 6 meters. As you descend along the slope, the gas bubble streams become increasingly visible, rising in columns from the volcanic substrate. Your guide leads you to the main vent fields at 12 to 18 meters, where thousands of bubble streams create curtains of rising gas that pulse rhythmically. The sound of the bubbles is audible through your regulator, creating the techno-like rhythm that gives the site its name. The volcanic rock formations include chimney structures and lava-like flows covered in soft corals and crinoids. Pygmy seahorses are found on the gorgonian fans, and ghost pipefish hide among the crinoid-covered bommies. The nudibranch diversity is exceptional throughout the dive. Your guide leads you deeper to 20 to 25 meters where the vent fields are most active, then back up to the shallower volcanic slope at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the garden eel colonies provide a relaxing finale."
