    Site Overview

Sebayur Island is a small island in western Komodo National Park, offering a sheltered reef system that provides excellent diving for all certification levels. The site features a fringing reef descending from 2 meters to approximately 22 meters, with extensive hard coral gardens in the shallower sections transitioning to a low wall with ledges and crevices at depth. Resident hawksbill turtles are the star attraction, feeding on the reef flat throughout the day and often approaching divers with curiosity. The shallower sections at 2 to 10 meters are rich in hard coral coverage, with staghorn, brain, and plate corals forming extensive gardens that shelter diverse reef fish including schools of batfish, snapper, and sweetlips. The deeper wall at 15 to 22 meters features gorgonian sea fans, barrel sponges, and whitetip reef sharks resting on the ledges. Moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish are common in the crevices, while the mild to moderate current keeps conditions manageable for beginners. Sebayur Island is best dived from April through December when the conditions are calmest. The site is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat and is often used as a checkout dive site or first dive on Komodo itineraries. The island's white sand beach makes it an attractive surface interval stop, and the snorkeling in the shallows is outstanding. For divers seeking a relaxed Komodo experience without extreme conditions, Sebayur Island delivers consistently excellent diving with abundant turtle encounters.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a descent onto the shallow reef flat at approximately 2 to 4 meters. Hawksbill turtles are immediately visible feeding on the reef, often approaching within a few meters. Your guide leads you along the reef slope as the mild current carries you gently along the island's edge. The coral garden at 5 to 12 meters is densely covered in hard corals, with schools of batfish, snapper, and sweetlips moving through the water column. As you continue along the slope, the topography transitions into a low wall at 15 to 18 meters with ledges harboring moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the deeper ledges at 18 to 22 meters. Your guide leads you back up to the shallow reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the turtle encounters continue and the coral garden is at its most vibrant. The shallow waters here are particularly clear, allowing for great final photos of the resident turtles."
