Komodo: Siaba Klein Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Siaba Kecil is a small island in the eastern section of Komodo National Park that offers a more dynamic drift diving experience compared to its nearby counterpart Siaba Besar. The site features a coral slope descending from 3 meters to approximately 22 meters, with healthy hard and soft corals covering the bommies and slopes in a vibrant display sustained by the moderate current that sweeps around the island. The drift at Siaba Klein carries divers along the reef slope past coral bommies, sand channels, and colorful reef walls, with the current strong enough for an exciting ride but manageable for intermediate divers. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the bommie ledges, schools of barracuda and fusiliers swirl in the current, Napoleon wrasse cruise curiously past divers, and hawksbill turtles are regularly encountered feeding on the reef. The deeper channels between the bommies at 15 to 22 meters add variety to the drift, with sand channels where blue-spotted stingrays rest and occasional eagle rays passing on the blue side. The shallow coral garden at 3 to 8 meters provides an excellent safety stop environment with vibrant coral and abundant reef fish. Siaba Klein is best dived from April through December and is almost always paired with Siaba Besar for a two-dive experience that showcases the full range of eastern Komodo's marine environments. The site is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat and is a regular stop on eastern Komodo day trip and liveaboard itineraries.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallow reef at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide leads you along the reef slope as the moderate current carries you in a drift around the small island. The coral bommies at 8 to 15 meters are covered in soft corals, gorgonian sea fans, and barrel sponges, creating a colorful underwater landscape. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the bommie ledges, and Napoleon wrasse approach curiously along the reef face. The deeper channels at 15 to 22 meters feature sand and scattered bommies where blue-spotted stingrays rest and occasional eagle rays glide past. Schools of barracuda and fusiliers form dense clouds in the current, creating excellent wide-angle photography opportunities. Hawksbill turtles are frequently encountered at all depths. As the drift continues, your guide leads you up to the shallower reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the coral garden is vibrant and the current moderates."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Siaba Klein is suitable for intermediate divers with Advanced Open Water certification and basic drift diving experience. The moderate current and varied depth profile make it slightly more demanding than Siaba Besar, but the excellent coral and marine life reward experienced divers. It is an ideal site for those who enjoy the sensation of a gentle current while surrounded by high-quality coral coverage. Photographers will find the mix of schooling fish and reef residents like Napoleon wrasse and sharks to be excellent subjects. It serves as a perfect stepping stone for divers looking to gain more confidence in Komodo's famous current-driven environments without moving directly into the most extreme sites.
