Komodo: Tatawa Kecil Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Tatawa Kecil is the smaller and more dramatic counterpart of nearby Tatawa Besar, located in the central section of Komodo National Park. Despite its modest size, the small island of Tatawa Kecil features some of the most impressive coral bommies in the entire park — massive coral heads that rise from the sandy bottom like underwater towers, covered in dense soft corals, gorgonian sea fans, and barrel sponges. The site features a reef slope descending from 3 meters to approximately 25 meters, with the most dramatic bommie formations found between 8 and 18 meters where the current concentrates the nutrients that sustain the coral growth. The channels between the bommies create natural swim-throughs that add an element of exploration to the drift. Whitetip reef sharks patrol the bommies, schools of barracuda and fusiliers swirl in the current, and occasional eagle rays glide past on the blue side. Napoleon wrasse cruise curiously past divers, and hawksbill turtles are regularly spotted feeding on the reef. The current at Tatawa Kecil is slightly stronger than at its larger neighbor due to the island's more exposed position, creating a more dynamic drift experience. The site is best dived from April through December and is almost always paired with Tatawa Besar for a two-dive drift experience. Tatawa Kecil is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat and is a highlight of central Komodo itineraries.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallow reef at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide leads you along the reef slope as the current carries you in a drift around the small island. The most striking features are the massive coral bommies that rise from the sandy bottom at 10 to 18 meters, creating an almost sculptural underwater landscape. The channels between the bommies offer swim-through opportunities, and the current-facing sides are covered in the densest soft coral and sea fan growth. Whitetip reef sharks are commonly seen patrolling between the bommies, and schools of barracuda form spiraling formations in the current. Eagle rays may glide past on the blue side, and Napoleon wrasse approach curiously. The deeper sand channels at 18 to 25 meters offer a different perspective with scattered bommies and open sand. As the drift continues, your guide leads you up to the shallower reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the coral garden is vibrant and the current moderates."

Safety & Hazards
- Moderate to strong currents around the bommies requiring good buoyancy
- Boat traffic on the surface during the drift ascent
- Sharp coral on the bommie surfaces requiring careful fin work
- Fire coral on the shallower bommies near the reef crest
- Variable current direction around the small island
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Tatawa Kecil is suitable for intermediate divers with Advanced Open Water certification and drift diving experience. The slightly stronger current and exposed position make it more demanding than Tatawa Besar, but the dramatic bommies and pelagic encounters reward experienced divers. It is the perfect site for those who appreciate complex underwater topography and the thrill of exploring hidden nooks and crannies between massive coral heads. Photographers will find the vertical relief and concentrated marine life to be a treasure trove of compositions. If you enjoy a more high-energy drift where the landscape changes rapidly, Tatawa Kecil will be a highlight of your central Komodo trip.
