    Site Overview

The Cauldron, also known by its more evocative name Shotgun, is one of the most intense and exhilarating drift dive experiences in Komodo National Park and possibly the world. Located in a narrow channel between the northern islands of the park, the site exploits the powerful tidal exchange that creates a high-speed current through the passage. The tidal flow is concentrated between two reef walls, creating a stream that can propel divers through the channel at remarkable speeds — the shotgun effect that gives the site its alternate name. The channel features a series of coral bommies, sand channels, and reef walls that divers navigate at speed, with the current carrying them past the bommies where grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and giant trevally hold position in the flow. Schools of barracuda form spiraling formations in the current, and whitetip reef sharks rest on the ledges of the larger bommies. The site demands expert-level diving skills, excellent fitness, and complete comfort in extreme current conditions. The dive must be timed precisely for the slack tide window, and experienced local guides are essential for navigating the channel safely. Despite the challenging conditions, The Cauldron rewards experienced divers with an unforgettable adrenaline-charged experience and outstanding pelagic encounters. The site is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat and is typically included as the most challenging dive on a northern Komodo itinerary alongside Batu Bolong and the pinnacle sites.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a negative entry from the boat directly into the channel current. Your guide immediately leads you to the nearest bommie, where you can take shelter from the strongest flow and observe the pelagic action. Grey reef sharks patrol the current-facing side of the bommies, while giant trevally and eagle rays glide past in the blue. As the current carries you through the channel, you navigate from bommie to bommie, using the reef structures for shelter and orientation. The shotgun section is where the current is most intense — divers are propelled through a narrow gap between the walls at high speed, requiring precise buoyancy and awareness to avoid contact with the coral. The channel opens up at the far end into a wider area with scattered bommies and sand channels where the current moderates. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the bommie ledges, and schools of barracuda swirl in the flow. Your guide leads you to the shallower reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the coral garden provides a calm finish to the intense drift. Total dive time is typically shorter than average due to the nitrogen loading from the deep profile."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Cauldron is designed for expert divers with extensive current diving experience and excellent physical fitness. The extremely strong currents, narrow channel, and high-speed drift make it unsuitable for beginners or divers uncomfortable in powerful current. Only divers with proven experience in similar conditions should attempt this site. It is the ultimate adrenaline rush for those who seek the highest-intensity diving Komodo has to offer. Beyond the thrill of the 'shotgun' itself, the site rewards skilled divers with spectacular pelagic encounters that are simply not found in calmer areas. If you want a dive that will challenge your skills and leave you with a lasting sense of accomplishment, this is the one.
