Komodo: Torpedo Alley Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Torpedo Alley is a thrilling channel dive in western Komodo National Park where the current accelerates through a gap between two reef formations, creating one of the most exhilarating drift diving experiences in the park. Named for the torpedo-shaped current that shoots through the channel, the site carries divers at speed past vibrant coral walls and bommies covered in soft corals, gorgonian sea fans, and barrel sponges that thrive in the nutrient-rich flow. The channel descends from 3 meters to approximately 24 meters, with the narrowest section at 10 to 15 meters where the current is strongest and the marine life most abundant. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the ledges at the channel entrance and exit, while grey reef sharks are occasionally seen patrolling the deeper sections. Schools of barracuda, trevally, and batfish gather in the current, creating excellent wide-angle photography opportunities. Napoleon wrasse cruise through the channel, and hawksbill turtles are often encountered on the shallower reef slopes adjacent to the gap. The channel exit opens into a coral garden at 8 to 15 meters where the current moderates, providing a calmer environment for the safety stop. Torpedo Alley is best dived from April through December when the tidal patterns create the most predictable currents. Accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat, it is typically combined with Sebayur Island and Bidadari on western Komodo day trips. The thrilling drift through the channel makes Torpedo Alley one of the most exciting intermediate dives in Komodo National Park.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent at the channel entrance at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide signals when the current is favorable, and you enter the channel where the current accelerates, carrying you along at speed. Stay close to the channel walls at 10 to 15 meters where the soft corals and sea fans are most prolific. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the ledges, and schools of barracuda and batfish gather in the flow. Napoleon wrasse cruise through the channel, often approaching divers. The narrowest section at 12 to 18 meters has the strongest current and the most dramatic coral coverage. As you exit the channel, the current moderates and your guide leads you into the coral garden at 8 to 15 meters. Grey reef sharks may be seen patrolling the deeper exit area. Your guide leads you to the shallower reef at 5 to 8 meters for the safety stop, where the current is mild and the coral garden is vibrant."
