Komodo: Wainilu Muck Dive Site – Komodo National Park
Site Overview
Wainilu is Komodo National Park's premier muck diving site, located on a gentle black sand slope near Komodo Island that supports an extraordinary density of rare and unusual macro creatures. The site descends gradually from 3 meters to approximately 18 meters, with the substrate composed of fine black volcanic sand, coral rubble, and scattered coral fragments that create micro-habitats for a remarkable diversity of critters. Flamboyant cuttlefish display their vivid color changes on the sand, mimic octopuses contort their bodies to imitate lionfish and flatfish, and hairy frogfish sit motionless among the rubble waiting for prey. Multiple species of pygmy seahorse inhabit the small gorgonian fans scattered across the slope, while ghost pipefish drift among the coral fragments. Various nudibranch species are abundant, along with mantis shrimp, blue-ringed octopuses, seahorses, and a diverse array of small reef fish. The mild current allows divers to move slowly and methodically across the slope, scanning for well-camouflaged species. Wainilu is best dived from April through December when calm conditions allow for stable visibility and minimal surge. The site is accessible from Labuan Bajo by speedboat and is often included in Komodo itineraries as a welcome contrast to the reef and pinnacle sites. For macro photographers and muck diving enthusiasts, Wainilu offers an unexpected side of Komodo that rivals the best muck diving sites in Indonesia.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the black sand slope at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide leads you along the gentle slope, moving slowly and scanning the substrate for critters. The key to successful muck diving is patience and careful finning to avoid disturbing the sediment. Your guide points out flamboyant cuttlefish walking across the sand, mimic octopuses changing shape on the rubble, and hairy frogfish camouflaged among the coral fragments. Small gorgonian fans on the slope host pygmy seahorses, and ghost pipefish drift among the coral debris. Blue-ringed octopuses are occasionally found sheltering under rubble — observe but never touch. The dive continues along the slope to 12 to 15 meters where the critter density is highest, then back up to the shallower sections for the safety stop. Nudibranchs, mantis shrimp, and seahorses are found throughout the depth range. The final few minutes of the dive in the very shallow water are often the most productive for spotting tiny nudibranchs."

Safety & Hazards
- Blue-ringed octopus among the rubble — do not touch or handle any critters
- Fine sediment easily disturbed by poor finning technique, reducing visibility
- Lionfish and scorpionfish on the rubble requiring careful hand placement
- Shallow depth with extended bottom time increasing nitrogen absorption risk
- Fire coral fragments hidden in the rubble substrate
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Wainilu is suitable for intermediate divers with Advanced Open Water certification who have good buoyancy control and an interest in macro marine life. The shallow depth and mild current make the physical diving easy, but the muck environment requires careful finning and hand placement to avoid disturbing the critters and their habitat. It is a dream site for macro photographers who want to spend time searching for and photographing rare and unusual species. Divers who have explored the famous muck sites of Lembeh or Ambon will find Wainilu to be a worthy Komodo equivalent. It is also an excellent choice for a second or third dive of the day, offering a relaxing change of pace from the high-intensity current dives found elsewhere in the park. For those with a keen eye and a bit of patience, Wainilu reveals a world of tiny wonders that are often completely missed by those focused on the larger inhabitants of Komodo.
