    Site Overview

The Boga Wreck near Kubu is one of Bali's lesser-known but highly rewarding shipwreck dives, offering an excellent alternative to the more crowded USAT Liberty site in nearby Tulamben. This steel-hulled cargo vessel was deliberately sunk as an artificial reef in the early 2010s, creating a thriving underwater habitat at depths ranging from 14 to 32 meters on a volcanic sand slope. Unlike the Liberty, which has been deteriorating for over 80 years, the Boga Wreck is relatively intact and structurally sound, allowing safe exploration of the cargo holds, engine room, and deck areas. The wreck has been extensively colonized by marine life, with thick growths of hard and soft corals, gorgonian fans, and sponges covering every surface. Schools of barramundi cod patrol the deck area, while barracuda and trevally swirl above the superstructure. The deeper sections of the wreck attract larger species including whitetip reef sharks and the occasional eagle ray passing through from the blue. What makes the Boga particularly appealing is the combination of wreck exploration and vibrant marine life in a single dive, with far fewer divers than the Liberty. The site is typically accessed by a short boat ride from the Kubu shoreline, and the relatively uncrowded conditions make for a more relaxed and immersive wreck diving experience. For advanced divers seeking a deeper wreck adventure without the logistical complexity of liveaboard travel, the Boga Wreck delivers an outstanding underwater experience.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the shallowest section of the wreck at approximately 14 meters, typically the bow or the upper deck superstructure. From here, your guide leads you along the length of the vessel, gradually working deeper as you explore the various compartments and deck features. The mid-section of the wreck at 18 to 24 meters features the main cargo hold, which can be safely entered through large openings in the deck for properly trained divers. The engine room area at the stern is the deepest section, reaching approximately 32 meters at the keel, where whitetip reef sharks and large groupers are often found sheltering. Throughout the dive, pay close attention to the coral encrustation on the vertical surfaces and the schools of fish that use the wreck as a reef structure. The return journey works back along the opposite side of the wreck, exploring any areas missed on the outbound leg. The safety stop is performed on the shallow upper deck or above the mooring line, where barracuda often form schooling formations."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Boga Wreck is designed for advanced divers with wreck diving experience and good gas management skills. The depth profile reaching 32 meters and the overhead environments in the cargo holds demand Advanced Open Water certification at minimum, with wreck penetration specialty training recommended for the enclosed spaces. Experienced underwater photographers will find the wreck provides excellent wide-angle opportunities with the coral-covered hull and schooling fish, as well as macro subjects on the gorgonian fans and sponge colonies. The site is less suitable for beginners due to the depth and wreck environment, though Open Water divers can enjoy the shallower exterior sections of the wreck with a guide.
