Lovina Dive Site – North Bali
Site Overview
Lovina is a charming coastal town on Bali's north coast that offers a relaxed and uncrowded diving experience centered around its excellent house reef. The dive site stretches along the black sand beach in front of the Lovina resorts, featuring a gentle coral slope that descends from 2 meters to approximately 18 meters depth. The reef is composed of healthy hard and soft corals growing on volcanic bommies, interspersed with patches of seagrass and white sand that create a diverse mosaic of habitats. What makes Lovina particularly special is the remarkable diversity of unusual and photogenic critters that inhabit the reef and seagrass beds, including seahorses, ghost pipefish, frogfish, and various species of nudibranchs that reward patient observation. Green turtles are regular visitors to the reef, often seen grazing on the seagrass beds or resting on the coral bommies. The site is also famous for its resident population of spinner dolphins, which can be observed from the surface during the early morning hours as they pass through the bay. While the dolphins are primarily a surface attraction, their presence adds a unique dimension to the Lovina diving experience that few other sites in Bali can match. The calm, shallow conditions and shore access make Lovina an ideal destination for divers who prefer a laid-back house reef experience, and the combination of macro critters, turtle encounters, and dolphin sightings creates a compelling reason to spend multiple days exploring the reef.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a casual walk into the warm water from the black sand beach, where you descend onto the shallow reef flat at around 2 to 3 meters. Swim parallel to the shoreline along the gentle slope, exploring the coral bommies and the sandy channels between them. The seagrass beds in the shallower sections are excellent for seahorse and ghost pipefish sightings, while the deeper bommies at 10 to 15 meters host larger species including turtles, moray eels, and the occasional frogfish. As you work your way along the reef, scan every surface for the incredible macro life that Lovina is known for, including pygmy seahorses on the gorgonian fans and nudibranchs on the sponge colonies. The deeper sand slope at 15 to 18 meters features garden eels and flounders, while the return journey along the shallower reef crest provides the best coral color and light conditions. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent above the thriving shallow reef, where turtles and schools of reef fish provide constant entertainment."
