    Site Overview

Mangrove Point on Nusa Lembongan is one of the most unique and ecologically fascinating dive sites in the Nusa Penida region, offering an extraordinary underwater experience where the mangrove forest meets the coral reef. The site sits at the northern point of Nusa Lembongan where the nutrient-rich outflow from the extensive mangrove forest converges with the open channel currents, creating one of the most productive marine ecosystems in Indonesia. The submerged mangrove roots form a labyrinth of arches, tunnels, and overhangs that are completely encrusted with corals, sponges, and oysters, providing shelter for an incredible diversity of marine life. Large barramundi cod patrol the root structures like territorial guardians, while banded sea kraits slither through the crevices in search of prey. The transition zone between the mangrove roots and the open reef is where the biodiversity reaches its peak, with species from both ecosystems overlapping to create an unusually rich assemblage. Manta rays are occasionally spotted cruising past the point during the cleaning season, attracted by the plankton-rich waters. The site is also a haven for macro photographers, with seahorses, leaf scorpionfish, and a remarkable variety of nudibranchs inhabiting the mangrove root surfaces. Despite the occasional reduction in visibility from the plankton-rich water, the sheer abundance and uniqueness of the marine life at Mangrove Point make it one of the most rewarding dives in the entire Nusa Penida region.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a descent from the boat near the point where the mangrove roots extend underwater. Descend to approximately 8 to 12 meters and begin exploring the submerged root system, which forms dramatic arches and tunnels covered in encrusting organisms. Swim slowly through the root structures, scanning every surface for the barramundi cod, banded sea kraits, and leaf scorpionfish that are resident in this habitat. As you move away from the mangroves toward the open reef, the topography transitions to coral bommies and sand channels at 15 to 20 meters. This transition zone is where eagle rays, barracuda schools, and the occasional manta ray are most commonly observed. The return leg works back along the mangrove edge, exploring the shallow root structures that are most photogenic in good light. The safety stop is performed near the mangrove edge at 5 meters, often with banded sea kraits and juvenile reef fish providing entertainment."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Mangrove Point is ideal for intermediate to advanced divers who appreciate unique ecosystems and high biodiversity. The site is particularly rewarding for naturalist divers, marine biology enthusiasts, and macro photographers who enjoy discovering unusual species in unexpected habitats. The moderate currents and variable visibility make it best suited for divers with Advanced Open Water certification. The site is also popular with snorkelers who can observe the mangrove root ecosystem from the surface. It is a fantastic choice for those who want to see something truly different from the standard reef dives. The combination of mangrove roots and coral reefs creates a unique aesthetic that is both beautiful and scientifically fascinating. Divers who are interested in coastal ecology and the processes that support such high levels of biodiversity will find Mangrove Point to be an incredibly satisfying and educational experience.
