Menjangan Island Anchor Wreck Dive Site – Bali
Site Overview
The Anchor Wreck is one of Menjangan Island's most unique and historically fascinating dive sites, featuring the remains of a 19th-century Dutch colonial vessel that sank in the deep waters off the island's northern coast. The wreck rests on a coral wall at depths ranging from 15 to 45 meters, with its anchor chain still visible leading down to the massive iron anchor that gives the site its name. Over the decades, the wreck has been heavily colonized by corals, sponges, and gorgonian fans, transforming it into a thriving artificial reef that supports an extraordinary diversity of marine life. Giant moray eels inhabit the cargo holds and interior spaces, while whitetip reef sharks patrol the sandy ledges at the base of the wall. Napoleon wrasse cruise through the bommies, and schools of barracuda hover above the wreck structure. The site's depth and challenging profile make it suitable primarily for advanced divers, but the reward is a unique combination of historical intrigue, dramatic wreck photography, and world-class marine biodiversity within the protected waters of the West Bali National Park. The Anchor Wreck is often combined with the nearby Pos 1 and Pos 2 wall dives for a comprehensive Menjangan Island diving experience.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a boat drop-off directly above the wreck, where divers descend along the wall to approximately 20 to 25 meters. The wreck is located on a steep slope, with its shallowest point at approximately 15 meters and its deepest section at 45 meters. Your guide will lead you along the most accessible sections of the wreck, pointing out the anchor chain, the cargo holds, and the marine life that inhabits the structure. The deeper sections should be explored briefly with careful NDL monitoring. Pay attention to the interior spaces where giant moray eels are commonly found. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent along the wall to the shallower sections for your safety stop at 5 meters. Take your time during the ascent to appreciate the dense coral growth on the upper parts of the wall. The visibility here is usually so good that you can see the boat waiting for you from quite deep."
