Menjangan Island Eel Garden Dive Site – Bali
Site Overview
The Eel Garden is one of Menjangan Island's most unique and charming dive sites, featuring an extensive colony of garden eels that extends across a gentle sandy slope in the protected waters of the West Bali National Park. The site takes its name from the hundreds of garden eels that extend their slender bodies from their burrows in the sand, swaying gently in the current as they filter plankton from the water. The colony is one of the largest and most accessible in Bali, providing an extraordinary underwater spectacle that is both mesmerizing and photogenic. Beyond the garden eels, the sandy slope and coral patches host an impressive diversity of macro life, including ribbon eels, frogfish, seahorses, and blue-spotted stingrays. The site's shallow depth and calm conditions make it an ideal location for macro photography workshops and training dives, where divers can take their time to observe and photograph the intricate behaviors of the smaller marine inhabitants. The Eel Garden is often combined with the deeper wall dives of Pos 1 and Pos 2 for a comprehensive Menjangan Island experience that showcases both the dramatic walls and the delicate sandy slope ecosystems. This site perfectly illustrates the diversity of habitats within the park, proving that there is much more to Menjangan than just its famous vertical walls. The peaceful atmosphere of the sandy slope offers a different kind of beauty, one that rewards the observant and patient diver.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a boat drop-off over the sandy slope at approximately 8 to 12 meters depth. Divers descend and spread out across the sand, moving slowly to avoid disturbing the garden eels, which will retract into their burrows if approached too quickly. Your guide will lead you to the most productive areas of the colony, where the eels are most densely concentrated. Pay attention to the coral patches and rubble areas between the eel colonies, where ribbon eels, frogfish, and seahorses are frequently found. The dive progresses at a relaxed pace across the slope, with frequent stops to observe and photograph the marine life. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent to the shallows for your safety stop before the boat picks you up. Be sure to check the small coral outcroppings during your safety stop, as they often harbor juvenile fish and unique crustaceans that are easy to miss in deeper water."
