Blue Lagoon Dive Site – Padang Bai, Bali
Site Overview
The Blue Lagoon is a stunning and sheltered dive site located just off the coast of Padang Bai in eastern Bali, offering a perfect combination of healthy coral reefs, abundant marine life, and calm conditions that make it one of the most popular dive destinations in the region. The lagoon is a semi-enclosed bay with crystal-clear water that lives up to its name, providing visibility that frequently exceeds 25 meters during the dry season. The reef system within the lagoon consists of a gentle slope covered with massive coral bommies, hard coral gardens, and soft coral patches that create a diverse and colorful underwater landscape. Schools of anthias and damselfish swirl above the coral formations, while blue-spotted stingrays forage in the sandy channels between the bommies. Hawksbill turtles make regular appearances, gliding gracefully over the reef in search of sponges and soft coral to graze on. The site is particularly productive for macro photography, with leaf scorpionfish, ghost pipefish, and various nudibranch species inhabiting the coral surfaces and crevices. The lagoon's sheltered nature and shallow profile make it an ideal training site for new divers and a perfect warm-up dive before tackling the more challenging sites of Mimpang and Tepekong nearby.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a boat drop-off at the entrance to the Blue Lagoon, where divers descend to approximately 5 meters and begin exploring the reef slope. Your guide will lead you along the coral bommies and sandy channels, maintaining a comfortable depth between 8 and 18 meters. The reef slope is gently inclined, making it easy to manage your depth and air consumption while enjoying the abundant marine life. Pay attention to the undersides of table corals and the crevices between bommies, where leaf scorpionfish and ghost pipefish are frequently encountered. The sandy channels between the coral formations are home to blue-spotted stingrays and garden eel colonies. As the dive progresses, you may move slightly deeper to explore the larger bommies where schooling fish and reef sharks occasionally patrol. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent to the shallower sections of the lagoon, where the safety stop can be conducted among the staghorn coral gardens at 3 to 5 meters before the short boat ride back to the harbor."
