Jepun Dive Site – Padang Bai, Bali
Site Overview
Jepun is a beautiful coral wall dive site located near Padang Bai that showcases the dramatic vertical reef formations characteristic of Bali's eastern coastline. The wall drops from approximately 5 meters below the surface to depths exceeding 25 meters, creating a stunning vertical landscape covered with massive gorgonian fans, soft corals, and barrel sponges that filter the nutrient-rich currents flowing along the coast. The wall face is alive with activity at every depth level: the shallower sections are swarming with colorful anthias and damselfish, while the deeper sections are patrolled by whitetip reef sharks resting on sandy ledges and moray eels peering from their crevices. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors, often seen gliding along the wall face or resting on the coral ledges. Schools of fusiliers and batfish hover above the wall, creating a dynamic and colorful canopy that adds to the visual spectacle. Jepun is often dived in combination with the nearby Blue Lagoon, providing divers with a comprehensive experience that includes both a sheltered reef garden and a dramatic vertical wall. The site's moderate conditions and excellent biodiversity make it a favorite among both beginners and experienced divers visiting the Padang Bai area. The visibility here is often exceptional, allowing you to see the entire vertical extent of the wall in a single glance. It is a site that perfectly captures the lush, high-energy environment of East Bali's coastal waters.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a boat drop-off at the top of the wall, where divers descend to approximately 8 to 12 meters and begin exploring the vertical face. Your guide will lead you along the wall in a gentle drift, maintaining a depth between 12 and 20 meters to balance air consumption with marine life viewing. The wall is approximately 150 meters long, and the dive typically covers its most productive sections in a single pass. Pay attention to the overhangs and crevices along the wall face, where moray eels, lobsters, and sleeping turtles are frequently found. The gorgonian fans on the wall are worth examining closely for pygmy seahorses and other macro subjects. As the dive progresses, you may encounter whitetip reef sharks resting on the sandy ledges at the base of the wall. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent up the reef slope to the shallower sections, where the safety stop can be conducted at 5 meters among the staghorn coral gardens before the boat picks you up."
