Mimpang Dive Site – Padang Bai, Bali
Site Overview
Mimpang is one of Bali's most exciting and dynamic dive sites, located offshore from Padang Bai in the nutrient-rich waters of the Lombok Strait where the Indonesian Throughflow brings an extraordinary abundance of marine life. The site features a series of rocky pinnacles and coral-covered slopes that rise from the sandy bottom at depths exceeding 35 meters, creating dramatic underwater seamounts that attract a wide variety of pelagic species. The strong currents that sweep past Mimpang are both the site's greatest challenge and its greatest asset, as they carry the nutrients that sustain the spectacular coral growth and attract the large marine animals that make this site so memorable. Reef manta rays are regularly spotted cruising past the pinnacles during the incoming tide, while giant trevally and eagle rays patrol the current-swept reef slopes. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the sandy ledges at the base of the pinnacles, and Napoleon wrasse cruise through the bommies with a confidence that suggests decades of protection. The coral coverage at Mimpang is exceptional, with massive gorgonian fans, barrel sponges, and dense soft coral gardens covering every available surface. Despite the challenging conditions, Mimpang rewards experienced divers with some of the most thrilling and biodiverse diving experiences available on Bali's main island.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a boat drop-off upstream of the main pinnacle, where divers descend quickly to the reef slope at approximately 12 to 18 meters to shelter from the surface current. From here, your guide will lead you along the pinnacle structures, following the current direction and exploring the most productive faces of the rock. Stay close to the reef to minimize the effect of the current and maintain control of your position. The upstream side of the pinnacles typically offers the best visibility and the highest concentration of pelagic life, as the current carries nutrients and baitfish toward the waiting predators. Pay attention to the blue water on the upstream side, where manta rays and eagle rays are most likely to appear from the current. The deeper sections of the pinnacles (25-35 meters) should be explored briefly and with careful attention to your NDL. The dive concludes when you reach the downstream end of the productive reef, where your guide will signal for a gradual ascent and safety stop at 5 meters. Deploy your DSMB before ascending to ensure the boat can locate you during the pickup in the current."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Mimpang is an advanced dive site that demands respect and experience with strong currents and deep profiles. We recommend a minimum of Advanced Open Water certification and at least 30 logged dives with recent current diving experience. The site is ideal for experienced divers who enjoy the thrill of drift diving and the possibility of encountering large pelagic species. Underwater photographers specializing in wide-angle and pelagic photography will find Mimpang to be one of the best sites in Bali, with dramatic compositions of mantas, sharks, and schooling fish against the deep blue backdrop. Beginners and divers without current diving experience should choose the more sheltered sites of Blue Lagoon or Jepun instead.
