Tepekong Dive Site – Padang Bai, Bali
Site Overview
Tepekong is Bali's premier offshore pinnacle dive site, a dramatic volcanic seamount that rises from the depths of the Lombok Strait and attracts an astonishing concentration of pelagic marine life. Located approximately 25 minutes by boat from Padang Bai, this exposed pinnacle is the most advanced and adrenaline-fueled dive site in the Padang Bai area, offering experienced divers the possibility of encounters with reef manta rays, schooling hammerhead sharks, giant trevally, and eagle rays in the nutrient-rich currents of the Indonesian Throughflow. The pinnacle itself is a massive rocky structure covered with a thick layer of hard and soft corals, barrel sponges, and gorgonian fans that create a stunning underwater landscape. The upstream face of the pinnacle is where the action is most intense, as the current carries nutrients and baitfish toward the waiting predators. Schools of giant trevally patrol the current-swept slopes, while whitetip reef sharks rest on the sandy ledges at the base. On the best days, reef manta rays glide past the pinnacle in a mesmerizing display, and on rare but unforgettable occasions, schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks have been spotted in the deeper blue water. Tepekong's challenging conditions and extraordinary marine life make it one of the most sought-after dive sites in Bali, attracting experienced divers from around the world who are willing to brave the current for a chance at a truly world-class pelagic encounter.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a negative entry from the boat upstream of the pinnacle, followed by a rapid descent along the reef wall to approximately 15 to 20 meters depth. It is crucial to descend quickly to avoid being swept past the pinnacle by the surface current. Once on the reef, stay close to the wall and use the current shadow created by the pinnacle structure to maintain your position. Your guide will lead you along the upstream face, where the pelagic action is most intense. Keep one eye on the reef and the other on the blue water, as manta rays and eagle rays often appear suddenly from the current. The deeper sections of the pinnacle (25-40 meters) offer the possibility of hammerhead shark sightings but must be approached with extreme caution due to the rapid NDL consumption at these depths. The dive typically lasts 40 to 50 minutes, with the majority of the time spent between 15 and 25 meters. The ascent is made gradually along the downstream side of the pinnacle, with a mandatory safety stop at 5 meters. Deploy your DSMB before beginning your ascent, as the boat operator needs to track your position in the strong current."
