Pemuteran: Bio-Rock Dive Site – Bali
Site Overview
The Bio-Rock reef in Pemuteran is one of the world's most successful and accessible examples of marine reef restoration technology, and it doubles as an outstanding dive and snorkel site right off the beach. Developed in the early 2000s using Biorock mineral accretion technology, the site consists of dozens of electrified metal structures of various shapes – domes, arches, tunnels, and abstract sculptures – that have been submerged on the sandy bottom just meters from the shoreline. A low-voltage electrical current running through the structures causes dissolved minerals in the seawater to precipitate and form a hard limestone coating, which accelerates coral growth to up to five times the normal rate. The result is a thriving artificial reef covered in vibrant hard and soft corals, sponges, and gorgonians that attract an impressive diversity of marine life. Hawksbill turtles are virtually guaranteed residents, often seen grazing on the algae-covered structures or resting in the crevices. Banded sea kraits slither through the tunnels, schools of juvenile fish swarm around every surface, and moray eels peek from the countless holes in the reef modules. The shallow depth of just 2 to 15 meters means that both divers and snorkelers can explore the site, making it one of the few places where the entire family can enjoy a world-class underwater experience. The site is also a living laboratory for marine conservation research and serves as a powerful demonstration of how degraded reefs can be restored through innovative technology.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a simple walk into the calm water from the Pemuteran beach. After descending to the sandy bottom at around 3 to 5 meters, you will immediately see the first of the Bio-Rock structures rising from the sand like an underwater sculpture garden. Swim slowly from structure to structure, exploring the tunnels, arches, and domes that are completely covered in colorful corals and encrusting organisms. The spaces between the structures feature sandy patches where garden eels emerge from their burrows and flounders camouflage against the bottom. As you continue along the reef line, the structures become larger and more complex, with some featuring swim-through tunnels and overhangs that are home to moray eels and sleeping turtles. The shallowest structures near the surface are the most photogenic, with sunlight filtering through the coral-covered frames to create dramatic silhouettes. The entire site can be explored in a single dive, but most divers find themselves returning multiple times to discover new details and subjects."
