Pemuteran: Taman Sari Dive Site – Bali
Site Overview
Taman Sari, which translates to 'Water Garden' in Indonesian, is a beautifully diverse coral garden site located just a short boat ride from the Pemuteran shoreline. This gentle coral slope descends from around 3 meters to approximately 22 meters, offering a rich tapestry of hard and soft corals, gorgonian fans, and sponge colonies that create a vibrant underwater landscape. The site is particularly renowned among macro photographers for its population of ornate leaf scorpionfish, which perch motionless among the coral rubble in shades of yellow, red, and mottled brown. The shallow sections of the reef are alive with thousands of small reef fish, while turtles are frequently encountered grazing on the algae-covered bommies. Mandarin fish perform their elaborate mating dances at dusk on the deeper sections of the slope, making Taman Sari one of the few reliable sites in Bali for observing these spectacular creatures in their natural habitat. The site benefits from the remarkable marine conservation success story of Pemuteran, where local communities have protected the reefs for over two decades, resulting in coral coverage and fish densities that exceed many more famous diving destinations. Whether you are a beginner taking your first open-water dives or an experienced photographer hunting for rare critters, Taman Sari delivers a consistently rewarding experience in calm, clear water.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a gentle descent from the boat onto the shallowest section of the coral slope at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide will lead you along the slope, gradually working deeper as you explore the maze of coral bommies separated by white sand channels. The first section features dense thickets of staghorn and plate corals that shelter schools of anthias, damsels, and chromis. As you descend to around 10 to 15 meters, the topography transitions to larger limestone bommies covered in soft corals and gorgonian fans, where leaf scorpionfish and frogfish are commonly found. The deeper sections at 18 to 22 meters have sandy patches where garden eels peek from their burrows and the occasional bluespotted ribbontail ray glides across the bottom. On the return leg, work your way up the slope for the best light conditions and coral color. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent hovering above the thriving shallow reef, where turtles and humphead wrasse juveniles are frequently spotted."
