    Site Overview

SD Point is one of the most thrilling and unpredictable dive sites in the Nusa Penida region, located on the dramatic southern coastline where the powerful Indian Ocean currents collide with the Bali Sea. This exposed wall dive is renowned as one of the best places in the world to encounter the enigmatic mola mola (ocean sunfish), which rise from the deep to visit cleaning stations along the wall during the cool-water season from August through October. The site features a sheer limestone wall that descends from 5 meters to well beyond 30 meters, covered in a spectacular tapestry of soft corals, gorgonian fans, barrel sponges, and encrusting organisms that thrive in the nutrient-rich upwelling. The strong currents that make SD Point challenging for divers also bring an extraordinary abundance of marine life, with schools of barracuda, eagle rays, and trevally swirling in the blue water above the wall. Thresher sharks, with their distinctive long tails and enormous eyes, are occasionally spotted in the deeper water during the cool season, adding to the site's reputation as a big-animal destination. The wall itself is a photographer's dream, with dramatic overhangs, swim-throughs, and vertical surfaces covered in colorful invertebrates. Due to the exposed nature of the southern coast and the strength of the currents, SD Point is best suited for experienced divers who are comfortable with drift diving techniques and cold-water exposure. The thrill of potentially encountering a mola mola at close range, combined with the dramatic underwater scenery, makes SD Point one of the most sought-after dive sites in Indonesia.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive is conducted as a drift dive, with the boat dropping divers at the entry point and following along the wall. Descend quickly to the wall at approximately 15 to 18 meters, where you will immediately be greeted by the spectacular vertical landscape of soft corals and gorgonian fans. Your guide will lead you along the wall, working deeper to 20 to 25 meters where the mola mola cleaning stations are located. Keep your eyes on the blue water beyond the wall, as the large pelagic species approach from the open ocean. The wall features several dramatic overhangs and swim-throughs that can be explored as you drift along. After approximately 30 to 40 minutes of drift diving, deploy your DSMB and begin your ascent, performing the safety stop at 5 meters above the shallower sections of the reef. The boat picks you up at the surface based on your DSMB position."
