Secret Bay (Gilimanuk) Dive Site – Bali
Site Overview
Secret Bay in Gilimanuk is Bali's premier muck diving destination, a deceptively unassuming shallow bay that conceals one of the richest collections of rare and unusual marine life in all of Indonesia. Located near the ferry terminal at the western tip of Bali, this site takes its name from the 'secret' critters that inhabit its muddy volcanic sand floor. At first glance, the barren-looking sand and rubble slope appears almost lifeless, but patient observation reveals an astonishing diversity of creatures that have evolved to thrive in this challenging environment. Mimic octopuses perform their incredible shape-shifting displays, flamboyant cuttlefish pulse with iridescent colors, and frogfish of every color perch motionless on the rubble waiting for an unsuspecting meal. Ghost pipefish drift among the sparse coral outcrops, while seahorses cling to gorgonian fragments and hydroid colonies. The site is particularly productive at night, when stargazers emerge from the sand and the famous blue-ringed octopus ventures out from its hiding place. For macro photographers and critter enthusiasts, Secret Bay offers an experience comparable to the legendary muck diving sites of Lembeh Strait, with the added benefit of Bali's warm water and easy shore access. The unique tidal conditions of the bay also contribute to its biodiversity, as nutrient-rich water from the Bali Strait is funneled into the area during tidal changes. This constant supply of food supports a high density of life in a relatively small geographic area.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with an easy walk into the shallow waters of Secret Bay from the beach. Divers spread out across the sand and rubble slope, moving slowly and methodically while scanning every surface and crevice for hidden critters. Your guide will lead you to the most productive areas, which include scattered coral outcrops, patches of hydroids, and accumulations of shell and rubble that serve as homes for various species. Move extremely slowly to avoid stirring the volcanic sand, which will cloud the water instantly. Most divers spend their time hovering just above the sand, scanning for movement and unusual shapes. The dive concludes with a gentle ascent and safety stop in the shallow water before the easy walk back to the beach. Take your time during the final minutes to search the very shallowest rubble patches near the shoreline. You might be surprised by what you find in just a few inches of water."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Secret Bay is a paradise for underwater macro photographers, marine biology enthusiasts, and any diver who delights in finding tiny, rare, and unusual creatures. While accessible to all certification levels due to its shallow depth and calm conditions, it is most rewarding for those with patience and interest in critter hunting. Divers who prefer big animals or coral gardens may find the muck diving experience less stimulating. It is an ideal site for those who enjoy the slow, meditative process of discovering hidden life. For many visitors, the ability to find creatures here that are found almost nowhere else in Bali is the main draw. It is a site that requires a different mindset than standard reef diving, one that prioritizes observation over exploration.
