Sekotong: Gili Layar Dive Site – Lombok
Site Overview
Gili Layar is a small, relatively untouched island in the Sekotong region of southwest Lombok that offers pristine coral diving in a remote and peaceful setting. Located just a short boat ride from its more famous neighbor Gili Nanggu, Gili Layar features healthy reef slopes descending from 3 meters to approximately 25 meters, with outstanding coral coverage that benefits from the island's low diver traffic. The reef is a mosaic of hard and soft corals, including impressive barrel sponges, delicate sea fans, dense staghorn thickets, and colorful table corals that create a stunning underwater landscape. Hawksbill turtles patrol the reef regularly, while moray eels peek from the numerous crevices and overhangs scattered along the wall. Macro photographers will appreciate the presence of ghost pipefish and mandarin fish among the coral rubble and rubble patches. The island's sheltered position ensures calm surface conditions and light currents throughout most of the year, making it accessible to divers of all experience levels. Gili Layar is particularly appealing for those seeking uncrowded diving, as the island receives far fewer visitors than the Gili Islands to the north. The white sand beach surrounding the island provides a beautiful lunch spot between dives and excellent snorkeling opportunities for non-divers.
Dive Briefing
"The dive starts with a gentle descent from the boat onto the shallow coral garden at approximately 3 to 5 meters. The reef immediately reveals its health and diversity, with dense staghorn formations and colorful plate corals stretching across the seabed. Your guide leads you along the slope, gradually working deeper as the topography transitions from coral garden to a low wall with overhangs and swim-throughs. At 10 to 15 meters, the wall features large barrel sponges and sea fans that provide habitat for ghost pipefish and leaf scorpionfish. Moray eels are frequently spotted extending from the crevices. The deeper sections at 18 to 25 meters feature sand channels with scattered coral bommies where cuttlefish hover and stingrays rest. The return leg follows the shallower reef at 5 to 10 meters, where the coral colors are most vibrant in the filtered sunlight. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent among the thriving shallow corals with schools of anthias and damselfish."
