Sental Dive Site – Nusa Penida
Site Overview
Sental is a vibrant and accessible dive site located in the channel between Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, offering an excellent introduction to the rich marine biodiversity of the region. The site features a series of large coral bommies rising from white sand channels at depths ranging from 5 to 22 meters, creating an underwater landscape that resembles a coral archipelago in miniature. Each bommie is a self-contained ecosystem, covered from base to crest with hard and soft corals, gorgonian fans, barrel sponges, and an incredible diversity of encrusting organisms. The channels between the bommies are patrolled by large schools of barracuda that form their characteristic circular formations, while eagle rays glide gracefully across the sand in search of prey. Humphead wrasse the size of small dogs cruise between the bommies with an air of confidence that suggests years of protection from fishing. The shallow reef crests are alive with thousands of small reef fish in every color of the spectrum, creating a kaleidoscope of movement and color that captivates divers of all experience levels. The site is easily accessible from both the Toyapakeh and Nusa Lembongan harbors, making it a popular choice for day-trippers and multi-day visitors alike. Sental's combination of spectacular coral coverage, abundant fish life, and moderate conditions makes it one of the most consistently rewarding dive sites in the Nusa Penida region.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the first coral bommie at approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide leads you from bommie to bommie, weaving through the sand channels that separate each coral formation. The first few bommies feature dense staghorn and plate coral formations that shelter enormous schools of anthias, chromis, and fusiliers. As you work deeper to 15 to 20 meters, the bommies become larger and more dramatic, with overhangs where whitetip reef sharks rest and large moray eels lurk in the crevices. The sand channels between the deeper bommies are where eagle rays are most commonly spotted, and the barracuda schools often form their spectacular tornado formations above the deeper bommies. The return leg works back through the shallower bommies, exploring the coral gardens that are most photogenic in the bright midday light. The safety stop at 5 meters is spent above one of the larger bommies, surrounded by the full spectrum of reef fish."
