    Site Overview

Seraya Secrets is Bali's premier muck diving site, a deceptively unassuming black sand slope that conceals one of the richest collections of rare and unusual marine life in all of Indonesia. Located just south of the main Tulamben bay, this site takes its name from the nearby Seraya resort and the remarkable 'secret' creatures that inhabit its volcanic sand floor. At first glance, the barren-looking black sand slope appears almost lifeless, but patient observation reveals an astonishing diversity of critters that have evolved to thrive in this challenging environment. Mimic octopuses perform their incredible shape-shifting displays, flamboyant cuttlefish pulse with iridescent colors, and frogfish of every color perch motionless on the rubble, waiting for an unsuspecting meal to swim by. Ghost pipefish drift among the sparse coral outcrops, while seahorses cling to gorgonian fragments and hydroid colonies. The site is particularly productive at night, when stargazers emerge from the sand, bobtail squid hunt in the shallows, and the famous blue-ringed octopus ventures out from its hiding place. For macro photographers and critter enthusiasts, Seraya Secrets offers an experience comparable to the legendary muck diving sites of Lembeh Strait, with the added benefit of Bali's warm water, excellent visibility, and easy access from shore or a short boat ride.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive at Seraya Secrets typically begins with a boat drop-off at the shallowest point of the sand slope, at approximately 5 to 8 meters depth. From here, divers spread out across the sand and rubble, moving slowly and methodically while scanning every surface and crevice for hidden critters. Your guide will lead you to the most productive areas, which include scattered coral outcrops, patches of hydroids, and accumulations of shell and rubble that serve as homes for various species. The key to success at Seraya Secrets is patience and slow movement; rapid fin kicks will stir up the volcanic sand and reduce visibility to near zero, making it impossible to spot the small subjects. Most divers spend their time hovering just above the sand, scanning for movement and unusual shapes. As the dive progresses, you may move slightly deeper to 15 to 20 meters, where the sand transitions to a coarser rubble habitat favored by frogfish and larger octopus species. Night dives follow a similar pattern but with added torch light that reveals the nocturnal species. The dive concludes with a gentle ascent and safety stop in the shallow water above the sand slope."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Seraya Secrets is a paradise for underwater macro photographers, marine biology enthusiasts, and any diver who delights in finding tiny, rare, and unusual creatures in their natural habitat. While the site is accessible to divers of all certification levels due to its shallow depth and calm conditions, it is most rewarding for those who have the patience and interest to spend an entire dive searching for critters the size of a fingernail. Divers who prefer big animals, coral gardens, or adrenaline-fueled drift dives may find the muck diving experience less stimulating. However, for those who appreciate the art of critter hunting and the thrill of discovering a mimic octopus or a blue-ringed octopus, Seraya Secrets is one of the best sites in the world and should be on every serious diver's itinerary.
