    Site Overview

Coral Garden is one of Bali's most beloved shore dive sites, offering a stunning showcase of tropical reef biodiversity just a short swim from the Tulamben beach. Located approximately 200 meters east of the famous USAT Liberty Wreck, this site features a gently sloping reef composed of massive coral bommies, hard coral formations, and vibrant soft coral clusters that create an underwater garden of extraordinary beauty. The site's name is entirely deserved; the diversity and density of coral life here rivals anything found in the Coral Triangle, with brain corals the size of dining tables, forests of staghorn coral, and delicate sea fans swaying in the gentle current. What makes Coral Garden particularly special is the incredible abundance of macro life that inhabits every surface and crevice. Leaf scorpionfish, ghost pipefish, harlequin shrimp, and dozens of nudibranch species can all be found here by patient observers. The site's accessibility and shallow profile make it an ideal training ground for new divers and a productive hunting ground for underwater photographers seeking rare critters. Ribbon eels poke their heads from the rubble, octopuses change color on the coral heads, and the occasional mandarin fish can be spotted during dusk dives. Despite its proximity to the more famous Liberty Wreck, many experienced divers consider Coral Garden to be the superior site for pure marine biodiversity and photographic opportunities.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with the same easy beach entry as the Liberty Wreck, with divers walking into the water from the black sand beach and swimming east along the shoreline. After approximately five minutes of surface swimming, you descend onto the reef slope at a depth of 5 to 8 meters. The reef system extends along the coast for several hundred meters, with the most productive area concentrated between 8 and 15 meters depth. Your guide will typically lead you along the top of the coral bommies, where the greatest concentration of macro life is found. Pay particular attention to the undersides of table corals and the crevices between bommies, where leaf scorpionfish and ghost pipefish are frequently encountered. The sandy patches between the coral formations are home to garden eels and jawfish colonies. As the dive progresses, you may work slightly deeper to explore the larger coral heads where reef octopuses hunt and ribbon eels maintain their burrows. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent back to the shallows, where the safety stop can be performed among the staghorn coral gardens at 3 to 5 meters. The entire dive is conducted in calm, clear conditions with virtually no current."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Coral Garden is perfectly suited for divers of all experience levels, from first-time Open Water students to veteran macro photography enthusiasts. Its gentle conditions, excellent visibility, and shallow profile make it an ideal training site where new divers can build confidence while still being rewarded with spectacular marine life. For underwater photographers, especially those specializing in macro and close-focus wide-angle work, Coral Garden is a paradise that can occupy multiple dives without exhausting its subject matter. The site is also excellent for snorkelers, who can observe much of the marine life from the surface in the shallower sections. If you are a diver who appreciates the smaller, more colorful inhabitants of the reef rather than the adrenaline rush of big animal encounters, Coral Garden will exceed your expectations.
