    Site Overview

The Tulamben Drop-Off is a spectacular volcanic wall dive that runs parallel to the shoreline just west of the USAT Liberty Wreck, offering one of Bali's most dramatic underwater landscapes. This impressive wall drops from just 5 meters below the surface down to over 40 meters, creating a vertical canvas of extraordinary biodiversity that showcases the best of Indonesia's wall diving. The wall face is adorned with massive gorgonian sea fans, some spanning over two meters in diameter, alongside dense clusters of soft corals, barrel sponges, and delicate crinoids that filter the nutrient-rich currents flowing along the coast. The Drop-Off is particularly renowned among macro photographers for its population of Bargibanti pygmy seahorses, which can be found clinging to the gorgonian fans at various depths. Leaf scorpionfish, ghost pipefish, and a stunning array of nudibranchs inhabit the ledges and overhangs that punctuate the wall at regular intervals. Deeper sections of the wall are patrolled by whitetip reef sharks resting on sandy ledges, while Napoleon wrasse cruise the upper reef in search of a meal. The site's proximity to the Liberty Wreck and Coral Garden makes it easy to combine all three sites in a single day of world-class shore diving, creating an unmatched trifecta of underwater experiences in the tiny village of Tulamben.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a beach entry identical to the Liberty Wreck, with divers walking into the water and swimming west along the shoreline to the start of the wall. The wall begins at approximately 5 meters depth and quickly drops away into the depths. Most dives are conducted as a gentle drift along the wall face, allowing the mild current to carry you past the most scenic sections while you maintain your depth between 15 and 25 meters. Your guide will lead you to several key features along the wall, including a series of overhangs and small caves that harbor sleeping turtles and lobsters, and the famous gorgonian fan colonies where pygmy seahorses are regularly spotted. Pay close attention to your depth gauge and dive computer throughout the dive, as it is easy to descend below 30 meters while following the wall's contours. When you reach the end of the productive section of the wall, your guide will signal for a gradual ascent to the shallower sandy shelf above the wall, where the safety stop can be conducted at 5 meters. The exit is typically made at a point where the wall meets a sandy ramp, allowing an easy return to the beach."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Drop-Off is best suited for intermediate to advanced divers who are comfortable with wall diving and can maintain good buoyancy control along a vertical profile. While the upper sections of the wall are accessible to Open Water divers, the most impressive features and the best marine life are found at depths of 15 to 25 meters, which is more appropriate for those with Advanced certification. Underwater photographers will find the Drop-Off to be an exceptional site for both wide-angle and macro work, with the gorgonian fans providing stunning backdrops and the pygmy seahorses offering a rare and rewarding subject. Divers who enjoy the sense of flying along a vertical wall with the deep blue stretching away below them will find the Drop-Off to be one of the most memorable dives in Bali.
