    Site Overview

Kuanji is a beautiful and often overlooked reef dive located along the Tulamben coastline, offering a relaxing drift over healthy coral slopes that showcase the best of Bali's reef diving without the crowds found at the more famous Liberty Wreck and Coral Garden. This site features a gently sloping reef composed of large coral bommies separated by sandy channels, creating a mosaic of habitats that supports a diverse array of marine life. The reef is in excellent condition, with extensive coverage of hard corals, massive brain corals, and delicate staghorn formations that provide shelter for hundreds of species of reef fish. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors, often seen gliding gracefully over the bommies or resting on the sandy channels between dives. Schools of bannerfish and barracuda patrol the reef edge, while blue-spotted stingrays forage in the sand below. On rare but memorable occasions, reef manta rays pass through the area during the incoming tide, attracted by the nutrient-rich waters flowing from the Lombok Strait. The site's gentle conditions and shallow profile make it an excellent choice for divers who want a relaxed, scenic dive experience with abundant marine life. Kuanji is particularly enjoyable as a drift dive, where the mild current carries you along the reef slope in a leisurely tour of the coral formations.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a boat drop-off at the upstream end of the reef slope, typically at a depth of 8 to 12 meters. From here, divers descend and allow the gentle current to carry them along the reef, maintaining a comfortable depth between 10 and 18 meters. Your guide will lead you past the most scenic bommies and point out the resident turtles, stingrays, and other marine life along the way. The sandy channels between the bommies are home to garden eel colonies and the occasional blue-spotted stingray, while the tops of the bommies are covered with colorful soft corals and swarming with anthias and damselfish. As the dive progresses, you may encounter larger pelagics such as barracuda schools or passing reef sharks. The dive concludes when you reach the downstream end of the productive reef, where your guide will signal for a gradual ascent to the shallower sections for your safety stop. The boat picks you up at the surface using your DSMB as a reference point."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Kuanji is an ideal dive site for beginners, families, and divers who prefer a relaxed, scenic experience without the intensity of strong currents or deep profiles. It is also an excellent training site for new divers working on their buoyancy and navigation skills, as the gentle slope and clear visibility provide a forgiving environment. Underwater photographers will find plenty of subjects among the coral bommies, from wide-angle reef scenes to close-up portraits of turtles and reef fish. More experienced divers who have already dived the Liberty Wreck and Coral Garden will appreciate Kuanji as a quieter alternative that offers its own unique charm and the occasional surprise encounter with larger pelagics.
