Site Overview

Ikema Island North Point is an exposed reef site off the small island of Ikema-jima north of Miyako-jima featuring dramatic coral-covered pinnacles and walls swept by nutrient-rich currents that attract abundant pelagic life. The site's exposed position on the northern edge of the reef system means it receives the full force of the Kuroshio Current bringing clear warm water and seasonal pelagic visitors including eagle rays schooling hammerheads and occasional whale sharks. The coral-covered pinnacles rise from thirty metres to five metres depth creating vertical relief that shelters diverse reef fish communities while the open water column attracts pelagic species. Massive table corals form natural platforms at ten to fifteen metres providing resting spots for green sea turtles and observation points for pelagic activity in the blue water.
