Kume Island Coral Wall - Japan Diving

Site Overview

Kume Island Coral Wall is a dramatic drop-off dive off the coast of Kume-jima featuring a near-vertical coral-encrusted wall descending from five to thirty metres in the clear waters of the central Okinawa archipelago. The wall face is covered with massive gorgonian fans soft corals barrel sponges and delicate sea whips that thrive in the gentle current flowing along the vertical surface. Whitetip reef sharks patrol the base of the wall while green sea turtles rest on shallow ledges and schooling jacks circle in the blue water beyond. The upper rim at five to ten metres features a healthy coral reef flat with abundant tropical fish providing an excellent shallow conclusion to the wall experience. The wall's orientation on the western coast provides spectacular afternoon light penetration illuminating the soft coral colours to their full spectrum. The site's accessible depth range makes it suitable for all certification levels with beginners exploring the shallow rim and advanced divers descending the full wall. Kume Island's relatively undeveloped tourism infrastructure means fewer divers and a more exclusive experience compared to Okinawa Main Island or Ishigaki. The combination of dramatic wall topography coral diversity and exclusive atmosphere makes Kume Island Coral Wall one of the central Okinawa region's premier dive destinations.
