Site Overview

Shark City (Same-dera) is Yonaguni's premier shark diving site featuring reliable encounters with multiple shark species throughout the year with seasonal hammerhead aggregations adding exceptional pelagic excitement. The site features a dramatic wall descending from ten to thirty metres with coral-encrusted ledges and overhangs where whitetip reef sharks rest during the day. Scalloped hammerhead sharks school in the deep blue water beyond the wall from December through April with groups of twenty to fifty individuals commonly observed patrolling the current. Grey reef sharks and occasional silky sharks add to the shark diversity during the warmer months. The wall itself supports healthy coral and sponge communities with diverse tropical fish sheltering in the crevices and overhangs. The Kuroshio Current brings clear nutrient-rich water supporting abundant marine life and creating exhilarating drift diving conditions. Strict observation protocols are enforced with divers maintaining passive positions to avoid disturbing the sharks during their natural behaviour.
