Site Overview

Shimoji Island Cave is a remarkable underwater cave system located off the small island of Shimoji-shima near Miyako-jima featuring multiple interconnected caverns and passages illuminated by dramatic shafts of natural light filtering through openings in the limestone ceiling. The main cavern opens at approximately three metres depth with passages extending to twenty-two metres creating an extraordinary underground diving environment. Light shafts penetrating through ceiling openings create spectacular illumination effects transforming the cave interior into an ethereal underwater cathedral. The cave walls are encrusted with cave-adapted organisms including encrusting sponges bryozoans and specialised coral species that thrive in the reduced light conditions. Glassfish cardinalfish and soldierfish school in the dimmer recesses while moray eels patrol the cave entrances. The surrounding reef outside the cave system features healthy coral formations with diverse tropical fish providing an excellent complementary dive.
