Site Overview

Tateiwa (Standing Rock) is a dramatic volcanic pinnacle rising from twenty-eight metres depth to within eight metres of the surface off the eastern coast of Yonaguni Island. The massive rock formation is encrusted with diverse coral and sponge life creating a vibrant vertical reef that attracts abundant marine life from the deep surrounding waters. The pinnacle's exposed position on the eastern coast means it receives the full influence of the Kuroshio Current bringing clear warm water and seasonal pelagic visitors including eagle rays schooling jacks and occasional whale sharks. The vertical relief creates diverse depth zones supporting different marine communities from shallow reef fish on the upper section to deep water species at the base. Soft corals and gorgonian fans adorn the current-facing surfaces creating colourful contrast against the dark volcanic rock. Whitetip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections while green sea turtles rest on the shallow ledges.
