Waii (Antenna) Reef - Japan Diving

Site Overview

Waii Antenna Reef is a vibrant coral reef system off the southern coast of Miyako-jima featuring a dramatic slope descending from eight to twenty-eight metres with exceptional coral coverage throughout. The site takes its name from a distinctive rock formation resembling an antenna that serves as a navigation landmark on the reef. The coral diversity is outstanding with massive table corals forming natural platforms staghorn thickets creating sheltered nurseries and delicate soft corals swaying in the gentle current. Green sea turtles are extremely common at this site with multiple individuals observed on every dive foraging among the coral bommies and resting on the sandy patches between reef structures. The reef supports an abundance of tropical fish including schools of anthias butterflyfish and parrotfish that create constant colour and movement. The gentle slope with minimal current makes it accessible to all certification levels while the depth range provides extended bottom time for photography and observation. The crystal clear Miyako waters ensure excellent visibility allowing divers to fully appreciate the scale and health of the coral formations from a distance. The combination of reliable turtle encounters healthy coral formations and easy conditions makes Waii Antenna Reef one of Miyako's most productive and rewarding dive sites for divers of all experience levels. The site's accessibility by short boat ride from Hirara makes it convenient for multi-dive days with the opportunity to combine the antenna reef experience with Miyako's other exceptional sites including the famous Yabiji system and cave diving destinations.
