Temple of the Sea (Tokong Laut) – Perhentian Islands (Terengganu) Dive Site

Site Overview

Temple of the Sea, known locally as Tokong Laut, is a dramatic pinnacle that rises from approximately 20 meters to just below the surface, creating a spectacular underwater cathedral that attracts pelagic and reef species in extraordinary numbers. The pinnacle's vertical walls are encrusted with colorful gorgonian sea fans, soft corals, and sponges that create a vibrant tapestry of marine life. Schools of trevally patrol the pinnacle's perimeter in impressive formations while green sea turtles cruise past the coral-covered walls with graceful indifference. Barracuda form hunting aggregations above the pinnacle tip, silhouetted against the sunlight filtering down from the surface. The pinnacle's base transitions into a coral-encrusted rocky reef supporting diverse reef fish communities including butterflyfish, angelfish, and wrasse. The site's exposed position means currents can be moderate to strong, bringing nutrients that fuel the extraordinary biodiversity. For experienced divers, circling the pinnacle at various depths provides different perspectives and marine encounters, from the shallow coral gardens near the surface to the deeper wall sections where larger species patrol. The site consistently ranks among the top dive sites in the Perhentian archipelago, delivering reliable pelagic action and stunning coral coverage throughout the entire diving season from March to October each year.
